home lighting options

Have you ever thought about the different types of home lighting options there are and where you should place them? It’s definitely important to consider if you are doing a renovation or remodel. Let’s take a look at aa of them because there are so many different types that it could be confusing. Certain types of lighting should be used in the appropriate space and that is what we will take a look at. The three main types are task lighting, ambient lighting and accent lighting.

WHAT IS ACCENT LIGHTING?

This is purposeful light intended to draw your eye to a focal point in the room. It adds some pizazz and gives that space style. It shines on particular pieces that you love in your home. Perhaps on pictures, bookshelves or a special heirloom you might have. Outdoor accent lighting is when you highlight parts of the architecture of your home or yard. This is very common during the holidays, especially Halloween and Christmas.

HOW DO I USE ACCENT LIGHTING?

As stated before, it is to highlight a certain focal point in your home. So, use it when you want a dramatic and sophisticated effect. This type of lighting is used alot in museums and art shows to really show off certain pieces.

WHAT IS AMBIENT LIGHTING?

This is definitely one of the most common types of lighting there is. Ambient lighting is the kind of light you use everyday when you are walking around your home. Generally this lighting is used when you are doing chores or maybe even making dinner. It’s the easy kind of lighting. This is not the kind to use when you are doing something up close and need a bigger sort of brighter light to find something or maybe even read if you do not have great eyesight!

HOW DO I USE AMBIENT LIGHTING?
Another name for ambient lighting is general lighting. With that said, it gives you a more relaxed feel and it gives you a warmer environment. It puts you in a certain type of mood if you will.

WHAT IS TASK LIGHTING?

It is exactly what it sounds like. You use this kind of lighting when you need concentrated light when you are working. This lighting helps when you are doing projects, reading, cooking, and lots of other things. Even though it has the word task in it, it does not mean it has to be for work! Use task lighting in conjunction with other lighting to have less glare.

HOW DO I USE TASK LIGHTING?

Task lighting naturally stimulates the brain. This is a good reason why offices use this kind of lighting. Maybe you should put this in every room, well at least the children’s room!! It could help them work harder…or just work! 🙂

Now that you know a little bit more about lighting types, will it make it easier to pick out light fixtures? Always remember that your home is just that, YOUR home. Feel free to play around with different sorts of lighting in each room until you feel relaxed and settled. Changing lights is an easy fix to give your home a well deserved pick me up!
