Everyone makes decisions regarding their homes that are not the brightest in retrospect, and the opportunities to do so during an Atlanta home renovation are endless. There is so much planning and so many choices to make during a home remodel that turning the wrong direction and getting off track is actually quite simple, especially if you’re attempting to do the upgrades on your own.

Five Atlanta Home Renovation Mistakes

  1. Following the trends too tightly.
Of course you want your renovation to be stylish and in line with the times, but avoid going too trendy. Trends quickly fade and change, and you don’t want your costly renovations to become dated over a short period of time.
  2. Not preparing your space.
Once you’ve decided on the project, you’ll be eager to jump in and get started. Be careful. Not prepping your work area will lead to challenges down the line. Wash areas that are going to be repainted. Clean the subfloor before replacing your hardwoods, and if you’re unsure what goes into proper prepping before a project, it’s best to do your research and speak with a contractor.
  3. Ignoring proportion.
Many people get too excited about the granite countertops or attractive sinks and forget about the size and layout of the space being renovated. Don’t overcrowd small bathrooms with large fixtures. Don’t create narrow doorways, hallways or walking space. Be sensible about balancing the room with its furnishings to optimize appeal and functionality.
  4. Improper storage.
Be sure to keep your tools and your materials stored properly. Wood and concrete should be covered with plastic sheeting and power tools housed indoors. Keep things in a climate-controlled environment at all times.
  5. Over renovating.
Look at the homes in your area – their square footage, market value and any building permits that are part of public record. Don’t overdo it or you won’t recoup what you put in when it comes time to sell. If the average price for a home in your community is $150,000 and you put $75,000 into a renovation, you will now have to ask a much higher price than your neighbors when you put your home on the market.

These are Atlanta Home renovation mistakes that rookies often make, and knowing what they are upfront may help first-time remodelers avoid them completely. The best way to avoid remodeling mistakes is to turn to a professional, and for large, complex projects, this is almost always the best route to take. But if you’re attempting to update your home yourself, be sure to spend ample time planning and preparing to avoid some of the common pitfalls of DIY home renovations.
