Home Renovations to Make a Small Room Look Larger

July 30, 2012 by Randy Glazer

There are large Atlanta Home Renovation projects that change the foot print of your home and there are smaller renovation projects where you work with what you have. Many homes have spare bedrooms or offices that just feel too cramped and small. If opting for the smaller option, how do you make the small spaces appear bigger.

One of the best ways, and of course the most money and labor intensive, is to actually enlarge it. Take down non – load bearing walls to make the room flow into another in an open floor plan type of way.

Another large remodeling project that can really add volume to a small space is vaulting the ceiling. This isn’t a DIY job, but by raising the ceiling and giving it architectural detail, the eyes are drawn upward when entering making the room appear much larger.

This option isn’t always in the budget, however, so there are some more sly ways to make a room look larger than it actually is.

Paint

Paint is a great place to start. If the tiny room is painted a dark color, it will feel smaller and more cavernous. Pick light, airy colors to enlarge the room. Also, painting techniques, such as adding vertical stripes or building a chair rail and painting the bottom of the wall a slightly darker shade than the portion above the divider, can give the room a bigger look.

Built In Furniture

Built – in furniture, for a small room especially, can do a great deal to enlarge the space. For example, a customized corner cabinet with deep drawers for storage and a place to hide away electronics is excellent for a small room. It allows you to clear up floor space and remove cluttered wires and electronics from view.

Be careful, however, because bulky furniture in a small room tends to overwhelm the space. Keep furniture appropriately scaled to the space, functional and not oversized. Also, go with lighter colored, complimentary furniture pieces to give the smaller room more flow. A bright, solid colored rug can help tie together dissimilar pieces.

Mirrors

Mirrors and added lighting are important for small rooms. A contractor can help you install large skylights to let loads of natural rays flow into the room. This will immediately make the space feel bigger, as a small room that’s dark feels even smaller.

Also, mirrors are great for reflecting light and opening up a small room. If there are windows, consider placing the mirrors on adjacent walls to reflect the images of the outdoors into the room.

Some of these small room remodeling tips require outside help from an experienced contractor, but others you can knock out on a weekend with the help of a couple of friends. If you have a small space and want to make it appear bigger, give thought to repainting, new lighting and adding mirrors to the room.
